Lighting
Lighting Applications - General
This covers an extremely broad group, including applications where LED lighting can be used in lieu of conventional lighting sources. The primary consideration for the design engineer is to determine the best way to produce the required light output for the situation. This application generally calls for bright light sources that have their beams aimed in an application specific direction that may include field coverage up to 360 degrees. A wide gamut of available power is available for various purposes, thus specific LED driver designs should be considered from the outset of the design.
Two things to consider when selecting LEDs are choosing very high efficacy parts with the appropriate lumen output and choosing excellent color / temperature consistency. Color rending index (CRI) performance is dependent upon the application with the expectation that the move towards high CRI performance will continue to gain steam and will be a differentiating factor. The LEDs should have thermal and lifetime characteristics consistent with the general LED industry norms.
